Cicada Sounds: A Collaborative Limited-Edition Release

I’m excited to announce the publication of Cicada Sounds, a project in development between 2023 and 2025. This book showcases a remarkable collaboration between Kee and Lisa Armstrong of Shape Shift Press, blending our shared passion for experimental printmaking and design. It invites viewers to slow down and immerse themselves in the assemblage. The mediums of collage—through image and sound—along with spatial elements, served as the palette for Kee and Lisa’s sound project Cicada Sounds. This publication offers a glimpse into that space. Cicadas became a muse, symbolizing persistence, time, and memory.

Behind the Process

Every element of this edition was crafted with care.

Structure & Materials: The book is housed in blue tabbed folders, reminiscent of archival systems and how we store time.

Printing Method: We chose Risograph printing for its layered, imperfect qualities that reflect the irregular beauty of nature. Each page was printed with multiple passes, creating subtle variations.

Hand Assembly: After printing, we spent countless hours cutting, folding, and organizing everything by hand, ensuring every detail was intentional.

CHICAGO EXHIBITION WEEKEND The third annual Chicago Exhibition Weekend features 50 participating galleries and creative spaces across the city from September 19–21, spotlighting Chicago’s vibrant cultural landscape and artistic spirit for locals and visitors alike. Patchwork Farms Solar Love Fridge Update!

Join us on Saturday, June 7th at 2 PM to celebrate the updated Patchwork Farms Solar Love Fridge!

This fridge is more than just a place for food; it’s a community resource built on mutual aid, sustainability, and collective care. With support from and in collaboration with Highwind Impact Group, Patchwork Farms, Orange Tent Project, and Keyante Aytch (Daze of Autonomy), we’re excited to reveal this renewed site, which supports community access to resources and connection.

Patchwork Farms Farmers Market runs from 10 am to 3 pm on Saturdays, so feel free to do some shopping at the market before gathering at the newly updated fridge at 2 pm. Donations to the refrigerator and pantry are always welcome!

We will also have a limited number of screen-printed Love Fridge tote bags to give away, perfect for carrying your farmers market goodies home or for bringing future fridge donations.

Brommel-Hahs Lecture Series: Art as/in/for Social Practice Workshop

Thank you to the Brommel-Hahs Lecture Series at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, IL, for inviting me to speak about my practice during the event. It was a pleasure to share space with the students and conduct a workshop before my talk alongside fellow artists Damon Locks @blackmonumentensemble and @edrasoto. This week is the last opportunity to check out the students' work from the workshop, as well as my installation, which includes a reading room featuring publications from @flatlands_press. University of Michigan Museum of Art with an event celebrating zines, comics, self-publishing, and DIY art, in conjunction with the La Raza Art and Media Collective exhibition. It was a blast sharing work at Behind the Zines and showcasing some of my favorite Flatlands Press titles alongside incredible works from my Chicago peers. Big thanks to Nicole Marroquin for the support and to the U-M Museum of Art for the invitation!

The next day, I joined the first-ever Zine Jamboree in Ypsilanti. It was such a joy to table and connect with the crowd, sharing Flatlands Press work and publications from fellow CPG members. Sold some work, made new connections, and had an easy pack-out! Shout-out to everyone who stopped by — you made it all worth it!

Brommel-Hahs Lecture Series: Art as/in/for Social Practice!

I’m thrilled to share that the NEIU Art + Design Department is hosting the Brommel-Hahs Lecture Series this year, centered around the theme: Art as/in/for Social Practice!

This special one-day event will feature engaging workshops for NEIU students, a public lecture, and an exhibition reception, will highlight local artists from Chicago – Eric Von Haynes, Damon Locks, and Edra Soto – whose work passionately intersects with community engagement, activism, and placemaking.

Moving Print

November 8 –January 17, 2025

Moving Print explores printmaking as a medium in motion, transcending traditional formats and dimensions. This exhibition brings together artists working with monoprints, risographs, latex-printed textiles, and digital media to examine how print can evolve beyond static images.

Featuring works by Lisa Armstrong, Mac Blackout, Tom Burtonwood, Sofia Diaz, Dud Lawson, Brian Steckel, Eric Von Haynes, and more, Moving Print invites viewers to experience print as a dynamic art form. These artists capture movement through layered visuals and experimental techniques.

Don’t miss this exploration of the vibrant possibilities in printmaking!

We are hosting two Animation workshops for Moving Print at the Chicago Art Department

Lisa Glenn Armstrong will facilitate two workshops around risograph printmaking and animation as part of the Moving Print exhibition at the Chicago Art Department. The groups will look at a survey of print-based animations and discuss the technical aspects of frame rates, sequencing, and documentation. Each group will create short animations reflecting on themes of change and transformation. These events are free, and no prior experience with risography or animation is necessary to participate. Limit to 12 participants per session.

Eric Von Haynes is a Chicago-based artist, printmaker, and community organizer. He founded Flatlands Press, a print studio that creates art objects and printed ephemera for artists worldwide, with a focus on community engagement. His work blends traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques, creating unique monoprints that invite viewers to reflect on time and memory. Haynes’ work is characterized by his use of slow media, non-repeating patterns, and an emphasis on process-driven art.

In addition to his artistic practice, Haynes is deeply involved in community-based initiatives. He co-founded The Love Fridge Chicago, a mutual aid group focused on food sovereignty, and serves as the President of the Chicago Printers Guild. His dedication to collaborative art practices extends to his residency at the Chicago Art Department, where he engages in projects that promote public participation and social connections through art.

He has exhibited works like Drawn Through Restraint, a series of lithographs exploring the intersection of design, time, and memory. This exhibition included participatory workshops to engage the public in risograph printing, highlighting his commitment to blending art with community-building.

Drawn Through Restraint Closing Reception

"Drawn Through Restraint" at Tiger Strikes Asteroids will close this Friday. Celebrate my exhibition and residency closing during the reception on Friday, August 2, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Gallery hours on Saturday will be from 1-4 PM.

I will work on-site during my residency using a litho and riso press. You are welcome to visit and join us during my activation days in July!

Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago is pleased to present Drawn Through Restraint, a solo exhibition and residency by artist Eric Von Haynes. Von Haynes’ work explores design and community building through slow media. Lithographs were created using analog methods of mark-making. Collaged materials were exposed to light and combined with layers of oil-based ink to create monoprints. The print series encourages viewers to pause, reflect, and consider time perception.

A Month-Long Celebration of Printers & Printmaking

CHICAGO PRINTERS GUILD PAPER JAM at Co-Prosperity (3219 S. Morgan St.)
every weekend from Sept. 29 — Oct. 21. All events are free and open to the public.   

The month-long residency will feature four-weekend exhibitions and workshops celebrating the past, present, and future of print in Chicago from the home of Printers Row and the birthplace of the typeface Cooper Black. The celebration concludes with the return of the annual CPG Publishers Fair print market.
